Some people are saying that the Parksville Qualicum Beach News Editor attempted to discredit a "local" parent for "questioning official numbers". What do you think? Did the parent, who asked for enrolment numbers since the school (proposed for closure) was first opened, lead community members including the Mayor astray? Read more ...

Our request for relevant information regarding the recommendations to close schools is the be considered by Judith Clark legal counsel for BCSTA. Read Board of Education Trustee, Eve Flynn's email wherein Eve states "I don't know if that is a breach of the public trust of the information we know and have for our own purposes as a SD which we are not privy to share".

1. Where the Board contemplates a school closure, it will take into consideration:
a. the extent of the potential impact on students, families and the community of the facility to be closed;
b. relevant factors such as enrolment projections, the physical condition of the school, available alternatives for students, catchment areas, effect on transportation services and alternative potential uses for the facility.

Proposed changes to the Public Consultation Process while the Public Consultation Process is underway

The School District administration started working on changing the Public Consultation Process shortly after the October 2, 2010 presentation wherein a school closure was recommended. First reading passed in January 2011. Second, and possibly third reading may occur prior to the inaugration of the trustees, December 2011. After 13 years of not publishing changes to the population estimation model, the BC provincial government Official Statistical agency, BC Stats, under new management, has revised the 1998 methods paper.

According to the School Opening and Closure Order, 3040, the process must be a minimum of four months - until February 2011; therefore, the QSDBoard was simply complying with the standing order.

The Qualicum School District Superintendent stated at the October 2, 2010 meeting, that a vote on which of three recommendations, all requiring the permanent closure of the high school in Qualicum Beach, would take place at the December 2010 Board meeting.
